A rocky, hut-like form fills the space behind Saint Jerome. A few details are lightly carved so are visible only on closer inspection. These include a smaller cross along the left edge of the panel and a skull at the base of the crucifix. Between the crucifix and rocky structure, a male and female lion run toward Saint Jerome, mouths open. In the space between Saint Jerome and the right edge of the panel, another person is lightly carved into the background. He runs to our right while looking back over one shoulder, perhaps at the lions. One hand is flung high, his mouth wide open, and his hair stands on end. His voluminous robe flutters around his body. Beyond him, triangular trees recede into the distance under a cloud-streaked sky.

He hovers above a landscape view, which is flanked in the foreground by groups of men and women. About a dozen people are clustered on each side, many of them looking up at Jesus, and most of them wearing religious garments that range from monks and nuns to cardinals and bishops. Two crowned men kneel to our right in the center panel, their hands pressed together in prayer. Each column on either side of the central panel is divided so there is a smaller vignette above taller vignettes below. Large groups of people gather in each scene. Much of the tapestry’s surface is now brown, but it is punctuated throughout with patches of rust red, sky blue, and pale yellow.

A staff or lance lies at his feet to our right.  The base has a coat of arms on the center front, and two animals, perhaps deer, lie to either side. The base is outlined in green or blue, and it rests on four brown, paw-shaped feet.

Some of the scenes below and to the sides of the dome are hard to make out but one, to our left, shows a person wearing blue holding a baby, and another to our right is of a nearly nude person on a cross. Two people in front of the tomb raise hands to touch its bottom edge. Underneath the casket, one person supports another, who has swooned or fainted. A fifth person there peeks around the front, right column. Two women are on the six steps leading up to the tomb, and a man using a cane approaches from our right. His robes are pulled up over a red gash on his shin. At the bottom center of the picture, three men wearing knee-length tunics support each other, arms slung across each other’s shoulders. Another man carrying a crutch across one shoulder walks away from the tomb, to our left of this trio. Rows of tan stone columns topped by leafy capitals supporting vaulted arches comes toward us to either side of the tomb. One more person wearing monk’s robes is visible through the columns, near the right edge of the painting. The floor at the foot of the steps is petal pink.
